Personal information

Jana  Besser Jana Besser is a PhD student at the ENT/audiology department of the VUmc. She investigates the interplay of cognition and hearing in speech understanding of hearing impaired people and the effects of aging thereon.
She has a BSc degree in Computational Linguistics and a MSc degree in Language Science and Technology from the Saarland University. Jana spent two years of her bachelor's studies at the University of Gothenburg. In 2007 she moved to the Netherlands to write her master's thesis at the University of Amsterdam.

During her studies, Jana worked as a research assistant at the Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI) group of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). Her focus was on developing the dialog components of systems for multimodal human-computer interaction. She was involved in the SmartWeb project (Mobile Broadband Access to the Semantic Web), and the i2home project (Intuitive interaction for everyone with home appliances based on industry standards). Her bachelor's thesis on disfluencies in spontaneous speech was part of the AMI project (Augmented Multi-party Interaction).
She also worked on audio retrieval at the Information and Language Processing Systems (ILPS) group of the Intelligent Systems Lab Amsterdam (ISLA), where she wrote her master's thesis on podcast retrieval optimization.
