Harm van Marwijk

Harm van Marwijk (55) is general practitioner and associate professor of general practice at the Department of General Practice & Elderly Care Medicine and the EMGO+-Institute for Health and Care Research of VU University medical centre (VUmc). From March 2015, he will be professor of general practice research in Manchester, UK.

He wants to encourage, initiate, conduct, publish and implement excellent research to increase our understanding of mental illness, long-term conditions and other health problems of older adults, and to stimulate better care and prevention. He combines research with clinical work and teaching.

Short biography

He graduated in medicine in 1985 and started doing clinical research on mood problems in later life in 1987. He participated in the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) programme for leadership in general practice (1990-1995 ‘Late-life depression as seen in general practice’). After an EU fellowship at the Department of Primary Care in Southampton, UK, he moved to VUmc in Amsterdam.

He has coauthored over 200 international and national articles on research, guidelines and teaching, with currently 177 publications in PubMed (for other papers, see Google scholar profile). His current SCI H-index is 23, and he has a Google Scholar H-index of 31. He helped to secure several million euro in research support. He has advised 15 Ph.D. students and advises 11 more. He participates in several guideline and policy committees on primary health care.
