Professor of Psychosocial care for people with dementia at the department of Nursing home Medicine of the VU University medical center, Head of the research programme ‘Care and support in dementia’ of the department of Psychiatry of the VU University medical center and the Regional Institute for Mental Health Services GGZ-inGeest in Amsterdam
The research programme Care and support in dementia is integrated in the Alzheimer center of the VU University medical center and takes part of the programme Quality of Care and Common Mental Disorders of the EMGO Institute for Health and Care Research of the VU University medical center.
QUALIFICATIONS: 1968-1974 grammar school Amsterdam; 1981 MSc in Human Movement Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam; 1991 PhD in Faculty of Medicine of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam on Psychosocial care for elderly people with dementia; 1992 lecturer and 1996 senior lecturer department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Vrije Universiteit; 2005 Associate professor department of Psychiatry VU University medical center, Sept. 2009 Professor of Psychosocial care for people with dementia at the department of Nursing home Medicine of the VU University medical center; 2000-2002 Member of the Commission Dementia of the Dutch Health Council; Chairperson of the working group Quality of Life in dementia of the Leo Cahn Foundation; from 2006 member and since June 2010 chairperson of the Board of the Center for Elderly Research of the VU/VUmc; Member of the International Psychogeriatric Association since 1989; Member of Interdem since 2000; Member of the Dutch Association of Movement Sciences. More than 200 scientific and professional publications on psychosocial interventions, care and support for people with dementia and their (in)formal carers. Invited speaker at more than 60 (inter)national symposia and congresses on psychogeriatrics.
AWARDS: 1997 Ter Haar Award for Amsterdam Meeting centers project; 1998 Schreuder Award for scientific work in the field of Gerontology; 2002 Van Beresteyn Gerontology Award for scientific work on Meeting centers; 2005 Societal Impact Award of the EMGO Institute for Research in Extramural Medicine; 2005 Dutch Psychogeriatrics Award; 2010 nominated for the Societal Impact Award Senior of the Vrije Universiteit.
