Vera van den Berg

My name is Vera van den Berg and I'm working as a PhD student at the Department of Public and Occupational Health of the EMGO+ Institute for Health and Care Research at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam since 1 January 2014.

In our project ‘SMART MOVES!’, we study the relationship between movement and cognition/academic performance in adolescents (11-14 year). Our final aim is to develop a school-based movement program to improve cognitive functioning and academic performance in adolescents.

In 2010 I completed my Bachelor in Human Movement Sciences at the VU University in Amsterdam. I wrote my Bachelor thesis (literature study) about the effects of physical activity as treatment intervention for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). After my Bachelor I decided  to study Pedagogical Sciences at the University of Amsterdam. In 2013 I completed my Master, in which I specialized in child development and educational problems (‘Orthopedagogiek’). I wrote my Master thesis as part of a research internship at the Bascule, a center for child and adolescent psychiatry in Amsterdam. The subject of my thesis was: mediation and moderation effects in trauma treatments for children and adolescents with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. I did my clinical internship in a youth care setting for young children ( 0 – 7 years) with developmental and/or behavioral problems and achieved my diagnostic registration. Beside my PhD I work once a month at a weekend day care for children from 6 to 13 years with developmental disorders (i.a. Autism, ADHD, mental retardation).
