Guy Widdershoven is professor of Philosophy and Ethics of Medicine and head of the Department of Medical Humanities at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Widdershoven obtained his PhD at the University of Amsterdam (1987). He worked at Maastricht University subsequently as associate professor and as full professor of Ethics of Healthcare. He was scientific director of the School of Public Health and Primary Care (CAPHRI) in Maastricht (2004-2009).
Widdershoven develops Moral Case Deliberation in health care institutions (hospitals, mental health care institutions, institutions for elderly care). Since 1999, he is involved in the Dutch projects aiming to reduce coercion in psychiatry. He is also involved in national and international projects on empirical ethics.
Since 2005, Widdershoven is scientific director of the Netherlands School of Primary Care Research (CaRe). He is past president of the European Association of Centers for Medical Ethics (EACME). He was visiting professor at Ethox (Oxford University).
