Palliative care and decision making in nursing home residents with dementia: translation, evaluation, implementation, and adaptation of a decision aid for families (WC2006-092)

A booklet to inform family members of nursing home residents with dementia in Canada on comfort care has been developed by Marcel Arcand and collegues. Its contents is in accord with recent literature and expert opinions. The booklet is a decision aid and answers frequently asked questions by families about trajectory of disease, clinical issues, decision making process, symptom management of end of life in dementia, what to expect while patient is dying, and grief. An English and French version can be downloaded from http://www.expertise-sante.com/guide_arcand_caron

We believe that the decision aid is valuable not only for Canadian families, but also to families in other countries. We therefore adapted and translated it to develop Dutch, Italian and Japanese versions. To study acceptability of the decision aid in each of the countries, an evaluation study using the same instrument is needed.
