The introduction of new EMF equipment and the effect on people’s perception of and worries about the health risks of EMF in relation to their well-being and health.

Background

Starting date: 01/05/2011

In the near future new power lines and mobile phone base stations are being build in several parts of the Netherlands, because of the increased demands for energy and wireless communication. Despite or due to the lack of evidence, people remain uncertain and concerned about the health risks of electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by this equipment. These concerns may be expressed in protests against the placement of new EMF equipment and some people living in the vicinity of existing EMF equipment report physical complaints they attribute to EMF in their neighbourhood. These possible costs for individuals and society demand a clear understanding of how individual, social, political and environmental factors may produce such an outcome. This ZonMw funded project intends to reveal this interplay of factors by means of a prospective cohort study.
