PneuMonitor - comfort and prognosis for patients with pneumonia and dementia (WC2010-123)

Background

Starting date: 01/05/2011

Over 10% of people in western countries die with dementia. In up to two-thirds of these patients, pneumonia is the terminal event. Earlier work has indicated severe suffering, along with undertreatment of symptoms. Comfort care is appropriate when death is near. However, prognostication is difficult and little evidence supports specific treatment approaches in these patients. All previous work has been purely observational. Although experimental studies in this area have ethical and practical difficulties, they are needed to advance the field.
