Pharmacotherapy audit meetings (PTAMs) using quality circles: a cost-effective strategy to improve guideline adherence in nursing homes? (WC2010-061)

Background

Starting date: 01/01/2011

The use of medication is high in Dutch nursing homes. Dutch nursing home residents use on average 7 different medicines on a daily basis. Especially, psychotropic drugs are often and chronically prescribed. The high prescription rate is not in line guidelines. There is also large inter-doctor variation in prescription of psychotropics between nursing home physicians, also indicating that guideline compliance probably is low.
This results in unwanted adverse-effects (somnolence, falls, deaths), lower quality of life and extra costs (hospital admission).
