JUST LIKE THE FILM: development of a computer-animation questionnaire to better measure functional limitations of patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis (wc2008-050)

Background

Starting date: 01/09/2008 To measure functional limitations of patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA), often questionnaires or performance-based tests are being used. Questionnaires are simple and cheap, but people may interpret the questions in different ways, e.g. depending on how they interpret ‘having difficulty with …. (performing an activity)’, or how important they consider an activity. These and other factors will influences their answers. As a consequence, multiple concepts are being measured. This is not a problem when we are interested in the subjective experiences of patients in daily life, but when we are interested in measuring ‘true’ functional limitations this is problematic. Performance-based tests are more suitable for this purpose, but time-consuming and expensive. There is thus a need for a new measurement instrument with the advantages, but not the disadvantages of both questionnaire and performance-based tests.
