MeMo-project: mediators and moderators of school-based interventions aimed at energy balance behaviours

Methods

Study design

Existing school-based energy balance behaviour interventions in European countries (DOiT, JUMP-in, Krachtvoer, BISSS) and Australia (Switch-Play).

Study population

The study population existed of children (aged 4-12 years) or adolescents (aged 12-18 years) living in the Netherlands, Belgium or Australia. For DOiT, the study sample consisted of 1108 boys and girls, aged 12-14 from 18 pre-vocational schools in the Netherlands. For JUMP-in the study population existed of around 2700 boys and girsl aged 4-12 years from 19 primary schools in the Netherlands. The study population of Krachtvoer ("Power food") the study population consisted of 1613 adolescents aged 12-14 years old from 18 lower vocational schools in the Netherlands. BISS, consited of 2840 boys and girls aged 11-15 years from 15 secondary schools in Belgium. In Switch-Play, 295 children aged 10, from 3 primary schools situated in low socio-economic status areas were included.

Instruments

The five studies used different measurement instruments to measure dietary intake, physical activity, sedentary behaviours, determinants derived from the Theory of Planned Behaviour or Social Cognitive Theory.
