How sickening is sitting

Starting date: 01/03/2013

The objective of ‘How sickening is sitting?’ is to assess the prospective and acute effects of different sedentary patterns on biomarkers of cardiometabolic function as well as the determinants of participation in sedentary behaviour in youth.

The specific aims of this study are:

  1. To assess the prospective relationship between sedentary patterns and biomarkers of cardiometabolic function in youth in a longitudinal cohort study.
  2. To test the hypothesized biological mechanism underlying the detrimental effect of prolonged sitting, i.e. the metabolic effects of a lack of muscle activity, in laboratory experiments.
  3. To determine personal and environmental correlates and determinants of sedentary patterns in a cross-European survey and intervention study.
