Honorary doctorate for Willem van Mechelen at the University of Brussels

The University of Brussels (VUB) has awarded Willem van Mechelen with a honorary doctorate. This year, the VUB hands out honorary doctorates under the title ‘’Break down the walls’’ to committed scientists who transcend the boundaries of their own disciplines and to personalities that have been at the frontiers of societal change. May 23rd, Willem van Mechelen will receive a honorary doctorate, alongside writer and former Dutch politician Jan Terlouw and three international elite scientist: economist Deirdre N. McCloskey, physicist Paul Ginsparg and doctor and sociologist Gary T. Marx.

Willem van Mechelen

Willem van Mechelen (1952) is Professor of occupational and sports medicine. He has published over 550 scientific articles and is co-author of an influential article in the Lancet titled: ‘The economic burden of physical inactivity’. This article received international media attention. Van Mechelen’s research focusses on health prevention, sport injuries (prevention and treatment) and the socio-economic aspect of physical activity.
